OpenAI’s release of its newest model, GPT 5.6, reportedly won’t be like its previous releases. Instead of distributing it to the public, the company plans to share it only with a select group of close partners because the Trump administration told it to, The Information reports .

At a meeting this week, CEO Sam Altman reportedly told staff that the government would be “approving access customer by customer” during a preview period. Altman reportedly added that if the limited release goes well, OpenAI hopes to follow with a general, broader release a “couple of weeks later.”

In other words, the Trump administration appears to be pressuring OpenAI to do what Anthropic is already voluntarily doing: keeping its most powerful AI models under wraps.

The company said it would release GPT-5.6 in limited preview to a select group of partners instead.

Productivity company Notion is shutting down its email product, Notion Mail, on September 22. The company said it is discontinuing its email inbox in favor of its AI agent offering. It noted that users were increasingly handing over the reins of their email to the agents, and not opening their inbox at all.

“As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we’ve seen more users hand off email workflows to them. Today, more than half of Notion Mail users manage emails without ever opening their inbox. So, we’re going all in on using agents to run your inbox,” the company said in a post on X .

Notion Mail is connected with Gmail, meaning all emails in the inbox will stay intact. However, users will need to export drafts and scheduled emails if they want to keep them. The company said that users can export snippets and auto-label instructions and use them elsewhere and emphasized that Notion’s email-based agents will keep working post-Notion Mail shutdown.

AI agents are becoming more sophisticated. They are evolving from answering questions to autonomously executing multi-step complex tasks.

But before these agents can be trusted to book trips or conduct financial analysis on behalf of users, model providers and the startups building such agents want to ensure that they perform reliably across a vast range of scenarios.

AI labs often use benchmarks to show off their model’s prowess, but a high score, even on an agent-oriented benchmark, doesn’t actually prove that an AI can accomplish various complex, real-world jobs correctly.

The investment will go towards creating 'digital worlds' that can test and challenge AI agents.

Anthropic’s Claude wins over paid consumers, outpacing ChatGPT

Consumers who pay for AI have been increasingly choosing Anthropic’s Claude, trend data from credit card transaction analysis company Indagari shows.

This is a sign that the AI lab has a wider and healthier set of customers than the niche it is generally considered to command — enterprise and startup developers using Claude Code.

Indagari analyzes billions of anonymized credit card transactions from about 28 million U.S. consumers. So while that data can’t give us absolute numbers about Anthropic’s revenue or total customers, it is a large enough sampling to spot trends.

Data shows that Anthropic's Claude is winning over paid consumers in a market owned by ChatGPT.
